Dress Code

Ateres Bais Yaakov is committed to a student Code of Dress reflective of the dignity and tznius befitting a Bas Yisroel. We aim for a classically refined and appropriate look geared to respecting Torah, tefillah and the learning environment. Though a standard school-issued uniform would easily assure an atmosphere of tznius and commonality, it does little in terms of accomplishing our sought-after end goal of developing knowledgeable, confident and self assured bnos Torah capable of making the right choices for life. The Ateres Student Dress Code provides enough possibilities for girls to select a wardrobe that make them look and feel good about themselves, a critical factor towards building the self-esteem of each student.
Tznius encompasses not only a way of dress; it is an approach to life. We look forward to our students learning to conduct themselves with the poise, grace and self-confidence reflective of their innate kedusha. We also ask that, in the spirit of sensitivity so much a part of tznius, clothing reflect good taste while being neither trendy nor overly costly. Parents are partners in this vital chinuch endeavor and we solicit your full cooperation in dressing our girls properly for school.

PRE-SCHOOL

KINDERGARTEN: School attire should include sleeved shirts and socks.
PRE 1A: In addition, to the above, Pre1A students are expected to wear skirts below the knee at all times.

GRADES 1 – 4

SKIRTS: Students may wear their choice of any solid-colored navy, black, grey, tan, or brown flared, pleated or A-line jumpers or skirts. All materials aside for denim are acceptable. Skirts with fringed and/or uneven hemlines, as well as ‘bubble skirts’ are unacceptable for school wear. Leggings or pants under skirts are unacceptable for school. All skirts must be sufficiently long enough to cover the knee in both a standing and sitting position and should not be longer than the top of the ankle. Please note, “Pencil/Straight Skirts” do not meet the standard of our school dress code and are not permitted school attire. Slits of any size are not acceptable.
SHIRTS: Shirts may be of any solid color material, reflective of a classic appearance. Shirts must cover collarbones and elbows. Denim, loud colors or patterns are not appropriate (parents should help children to make sure the shirt worn is not too tight and clingy to the body.) Shirts may not have large words, large logos, or large pictures. Undershirts and shells may not be ribbed and must be tucked in.
VESTS OR SWEATERS: Solid color vests or sweaters may be worn over appropriate shirts. Vests or sweaters may not be decorated with large writing, large logos, numbers or pictures.
SHOES, SOCKS AND ACCESSORIES: Socks must be worn and must cover the ankles. Shoes, socks and accessories must be in consonance with standards of Tznius and the school’s desired classic look. Nail polish is not appropriate for school.

GRADES 5 – 6

SKIRTS: SEE GRADES 1 – 4
BLOUSES: Button-down collared blouses of any solid color or patterned material, reflective of a classic appearance, are to be worn at all times. Blouses made of denim, knits and t-shirt materials are not considered appropriate. Tight, form-fitting (“stretch”) blouses are not in keeping with the letter or spirit of Halachic requirements. Note: blouses must be closed to cover collar bones and must cover elbows. Shells (not ribbed) may be worn under appropriate long sleeved shirts with no more than one button open. Undershirts and shells may not be ribbed and must be tucked in.
VESTS OR SWEATERS: Vests or sweaters may be worn over appropriate long sleeved shirts. They may not be decorated with large writing, logos, numbers or pictures.
SHOES, SOCKS AND ACCESSORIES: Knee socks, tights or pantyhose are to be worn daily. Knee socks may not have any words printed on them. Students who wear knee socks must be sure that they rise at least to the height of the hem of the skirt. Nail polish, long earrings and choker type necklaces are not suitable for the school setting.

Grades 7 – 8 (As above, except for item below)

Skirts: Students may wear their choice of any solid-colored LONG navy, black, grey, tan, or brown flared, pleated or A-line skirts made of loose fitting, non-clingy material (t-shirt fabric or denim are not appropriate for school). Skirts with fringed and/or uneven hemlines are not acceptable. “Leggings” or
pants under skirts are not permitted. Skirts may not be longer than the top of the shoe and may not be higher than mid-calf. Slits of any size are unacceptable.

Parents are asked to be full participants in the choice of clothing students wear to school. Though we anticipate full compliance with the dress code, the following policy will be applied to address any deviation from school standards..
A violation in dress code compliance may result in parents being expected to bring appropriate school clothing to their daughter in order for her to return to class.
Tznius encompasses modesty and sensitivity. As such, please choose clothing and accessories befitting a Bais Yaakov girl.
